Help! Suddenly I can't enter DOS commands

My Win Xp computer has been crashing lately and now I can't use DOS REGEDIT to analyze the problem. I select RUN from the START menu and enter REGEDIT, but it just flashes everything on the screen once and nothing happens. Also, when I try to go to START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACESSORIES/COMMAND PROMPT, nothing happens.
