It's also a very dangerous assumption that files with the same exact names are in fact duplicates, the contents may be substantially different. Some operating systems save duplicates of files with identical filenames in separate locations for backup and/or repair purposes. One example is the Windows XP registry files, the current files being saved in C:\Windows\System32\Config\ while the repair versions are saved in C:\Windows\Repair\. Several third party programs to delete duplicate files are available but should be used with generous servings of caution.
