Unfortunately, you really aren't explaining the situation well. You can of course set a static IP address of your choice in both DOS and XP. If you are using XP you don't want to mess with DOS. I think you may not know what the IP address was. In that case, XP has an event viewer that will allow you to see messages pertaining to DHCP requests and leases.
