: So my wifes emachines laptop is failing. I am attempting to correct a situation where windows logs me in, then logs me right back out.
: I have been attempting via the recovery console to run the system restore program ( rstrui.exe ). I've tried what microsoft listed %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
: also
: systemroot\system32\retore\rstrui.exe
: also
: systemroot\system32\restore\rstrui (etc.)

: So I learned how to change directorys and now I have a dos command prompt that reads
: C:windows\system32\restore
: but I am unable to run rstrui.exe. Being a total dos newbie (I try to keep my comp maintained so I can avoid the strange world of dos) what am I doing wrong?
: Microsofts command line is not recognized by dos, and I have no clue if I'm doing this correctly.

: Shouldn't the fact that I have the correct directory open at my command prompt allow me to just run the program by typing it's name (either rstrui.exe or rstrui)??

: Argghh. this is my first post about this issue so if I'm not at the right place I'll gladly post on any other site that anyone might feel is better for this issue.

: Thanks

The System Restore tool cannot be run from a Recovery Console prompt. It can be be run by booting to "Safe Mode with a command prompt".
